Commonwealth Awards $20,053,105 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Funding

RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) announced today the receipt of post-disaster funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These awards were received under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) under two federal disaster declarations (FEMA-DR-4602-VA) and (FEMA-DR-4512-VA). These disasters were declared to provide funding for relief efforts to localities following the severe winter storm and snowstorm disaster of February 2021 and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic respectively. All of the projects are funded with 90% federal funds and 10% state funds.

“VDEM continues to strongly support local governments in meeting their risk reduction goals through FEMA hazard mitigation assistance grants” said State Coordinator of Emergency Management, Shawn Talmadge.

VDEM administers these federal funds on behalf of FEMA. In addition to reducing the risk to Virginia communities through multiple mitigation planning efforts, funding has been allocated to structural projects intended to bolster resilience including the “Fleetwood Drive Floodgates” project for Prince William County and the “North Armistead Resilience Project” for the City of Hampton; this area has seen impacts from flooding over the last several years.
